What is a fuel tanker truck used for

Fuel tanker trucks and oil tanker trucks move gasoline, diesel, and crude oil from terminals and refineries to the fleets, job sites, and stations that run on them. Unlike a general tanker, a fuel truck is built around the specific weight and handling requirements of petroleum products — which is why fuel and oil tankers tend to look and spec out differently from the water or propane trucks on our broader tanker trucks page.

How much does a fuel tanker truck hold

Fuel tanker capacity generally runs 8,000 to 11,600 gallons for over-the-road delivery tankers, while smaller bobtail-style fuel trucks and oil trucks used for local or on-site delivery typically hold 3,000 to 5,000 gallons. Many fuel tankers are multi-compartment, letting one truck carry two or three grades of fuel on a single run — a spec worth checking on any listing if your routes deliver more than one product.

What to check before buying a used fuel or oil truck

  • Tank material and compatibility — aluminum and steel tanks are standard for fuel and oil; confirm there’s no history of incompatible cargo.
  • Compartment count — single-compartment for one product, multi-compartment for mixed deliveries.
  • DOT hazmat certification and placarding, current for the routes you run.
  • Inspection and pressure-test history, available on our equipment listings alongside usage hours and location.

Every fuel and oil tanker truck listed here includes that equipment history up front, so you can compare specs across listings before you bid.
